Class Description:

This course will help participants to recognize intersectionalities between sexuality and specific cultural groups in the US; allow participants to begin to define culture in new ways; and help participants to understand how race, religion, and ethnicity inform beliefs, values, and decision making with regard to sexual behaviors, sexual health, and sexual identities. Join us for a fascinating discussion of these topics and a new way to look at ourselves. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss culture and its relationship to sexuality. 
  • Give at least three (3) examples about how culture informs individual beliefs, values, and decision-making regarding sexuality and sexual wellness. 
  • Identify at least two (2) areas that may be a challenge or resistance to providing care. 
  • Explain at least one (1) instance where ethnocentrism has caused harm in the field of sexology. 
  • Define Intersectionality and recognize at least two (2) areas in their current work that are in need of adaptations.
  • Identify at least three (3) myths that are created and assigned to specific groups (i.e. stereotypes, media influences, etc).
