 Class description: 

Sexuality and spirituality have often been treated as separate, or even opposing, parts of human experience. Yet for many people, erotic pleasure, love, connection, and spiritual experience are deeply intertwined.

This course explores Sacred Sexuality as both a personal experience and a contemporary sexological phenomenon. We will look at why spirituality can function as an erotic turn-on, how religious shame and body-negative beliefs can create a hunger for sexual experiences that feel spiritually meaningful, and how modern Sacred Sexuality practices attempt to meet that need.

Participants will be introduced to common practices and ideas found in Neo-Tantra and contemporary Sacred Sexuality communities, including breathwork, ritual, erotic energy, expanded ideas of orgasm, and embodied attention. We will also distinguish these modern practices from historical Hindu Tantra, examining cultural appropriation, commercialization, gender stereotypes, and power dynamics.

The course combines lecture, discussion, small-group reflection, and optional experiential practices so participants can explore not only what Sacred Sexuality means, but what these practices are designed to evoke in the body. Students will leave the class feeling more confident talking with clients/students about Sacred Sexuality in ways that are practical, respectful, culturally aware, and grounded in sexology.

Learning Objectives

Recognize why sexuality and spirituality sometimes become linked

Identify the importance of neurobiology, meaning, shame, and religious beliefs about the body.

Discuss how spirituality, sacredness, and experiences of transcendence can function as erotic turn-ons for some people.

Describe at least 2 common practices and beliefs in modern Sacred Sexuality and Neo-Tantra, including expanded ideas of arousal, orgasm, breath, energy, ritual, and erotic embodiment.
 
Distinguish ways that Classical Hindu/Buddhist Tantra differs from modern Neo-Tantra

Discuss some ways that commercialization, cultural appropriation, gender stereotypes, and power dynamics have shaped contemporary Sacred Sexuality.
