Class description:

This class will explore what is involved in sexual trauma, physiological and psychological responses to it, and trauma-informed methods for education as well as therapy. We will explore the short and long term effects of trauma, best practices to treat sexual trauma, ways people can manage flashbacks and triggers, and selfcare tools for therapists, educators, and those we work with. 

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this session participants will be able Differentiate between fight, flight, and freeze/immobilize.
  • By the end of this session participants will be able to Describe internal and external safety and how to go about establishing both with the client.
  • By the end of this session participants will be able to Describe how to help clients come back from dissociation.
  • By the end of this session participants will be able to Describe three benefits of self-touch as it relates to healing from sexually traumatic experiences.

  • Identify multiple ways trauma can impact learning and participation in sexuality education.

  • Understand how to apply the "Sexuality Education Wheel of Context" (developed by Dr Nasserzadeh) to assess the influence of trauma within educational settings, and use it to adapt content and develop trauma-responsive teaching strategies.

    3. Describe and identify ways to implement at least two trauma-informed practices for building safety, trust, and emotional regulation in sexuality education environments to foster a "climate of safety."
