Polyamorous systems are new for the therapy field, and current treatment models are very scarce. In some ways, poly systems have very different dynamics from traditional family systems, and in some ways they do not. Using a blended families model can be very helpful as a self-concept for those in the system, or for use with polyamorous clients. This holds true whether they identify as a family or not. There are existing models (Papernow,1993) that can address the struggles felt by poly partners very well.

This presentation will

1. Discuss common transitions that poly people experience
2. Outline the stages of blended families in the context of a polyamorous system's development as one way to conceptualize
   A. common stages of adjustment
   B. strategies for normalizing conflicts.
3. Discuss 5 challenges that poly systems face that are similar to those in stepfamilies. Clinicians will obtain knowledge of an existing model that can be used for further study in their own practices. Other participants will be able to use the information as a conceptual framework for polyamorous groups.
