The landscape of America has changed when it comes to drugs, and while many old claims have been debunked, new mythologies have emerged. Cannabis and various plant medicines are everywhere; many of their advocates claiming they can heal everything from depression to pain sexual problems. How do we discern the facts from the hype? Which drugs have sexual side effects? Where do we begin?
In addition, substance abuse can create particular sexual issues and problems that last even after a person is in recovery, yet most substance abuse treatment does not include much in the way of sexual recovery, and most sex therapists know little about substance abuse. This webinar will explore these issues historically as well as giving an overview of the current climate and the most common direct concerns.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Describe the changing nature of Western cultural values and the treatment that has arisen from these values.
- Identify at least 3 emerging and standing concerns about regular cannabis use or abuse.
- Recognize new trends in hallucinogens and discuss the need for research.
- Identify some Indigenous ideas about plant medicine and what represents abuse in many Indigenous belief systems.
- Discuss some common treatment philosophies and modalities in both sexuality and substance abuse fields.
- Identify some common sexual issues for clients in recovery.
- Identify sexual issues with drugs commonly used in SA treatment.
- Issues for LGBT people in substance abuse treatment.
