Are you ready to be a great Sexuality Therapist?

What does it mean to be a sex therapist? What happens in the therapy room of a sex therapist, and how does it differ from other forms of therapy? In this training, we explore some of the nuances and tools that sex therapists bring into the room. Students will learn about some common models for sex therapy, and how to apply systemic frameworks to the practice of sex therapy.
Students will leave with concrete skills that they can apply to their own practice, whether they are new to sex therapy or veterans of the field.

You will learn:

1. How sex therapy differs from other Therapeutic modalities and the underpinnings of ethical and sex positive sex therapy practice through the following learning objectives:

  • Identify common presenting issues in sex therapy
  • Apply the case dive framework for managing countertransference
  • Identify at least 2 organizations besides AASECT who specialize in sexuality and sexual health
  • Utilize existing clinical skills and strengths in sex therapy practice

2. Existing frameworks for practicing sex therapy through the following learning objectives:

  • Describe at least two core components of Schnarch’s Therapy frameworks
  • Contrast Gina Ogden’s 4D Sexuality/Sprituality wheel and Crucible Therapy
  • Discuss the PLISSIT model and use cases to practice discernment in when to use each skill.

3. The benefits of using family systems in sex therapy through the following learning objectives:

  • Utilize at least 2 components of the family systems model of therapy
  • Adapt family systems to presenting issues in sex therapy
    Discuss and analyze the family systems model
  • Apply the family systems model of Sex therapy to initial assessments.
  • Discuss how intersectonality, systemic oppression, and macro social forces impact client work.
  • Practice using ecograms as tools for assessment and clinical conceptualization

4. Applying Gottman Method to couples presenting in sex therapy through the following learning objectives:

  • Identifying at least 2 core tools of the Gottman method
  • Apply the Gottman concept of bids tomcase examples and media clips
  • Identify the phases of the Gottman’s initial assessment

5. How systemic frameworks can be utilized for the purpose of sex therapy, as well as the benefits and pitfalls of sex therapy models through the following learning objectives:

  • Discuss the role of homework and structured exercises in sex therapy
  • Review a couples case and discuss whether and when to assign sensate focus to clients
  • Discern and analyze when and how to modify homework assignment to minimize non-compliance
  • Discuss the difference between different approaches to couples therapy and partnered sex therapy.

6. Specific therapeutic skills and interventions that can be utilized over the course of the therapeutic process. through the following learning objectives:

  • Role play methods of applying systems frameworks as various stages of the therapeutic process (assessment, beginning therapy, well established therapeutic relationship, termination)
  • Identify at least two similarities and two differences between individual and couples work.
  • Discuss and analyze at least two benefits and pitfalls of using the frameworks discussed in class.
    Suggest strategies based on the models discussed.
  • Discern when to use various referral and collaboration entities such as physicians, psychiatrists, institutions, bodyworkers and spiritual leaders.

Instructors

Samantha Manewitz, MSW

Samantha Manewitz (she/her) is an educator and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist currently in the dissertation phase of a doctoral program focusing on sexuality. She has given presentations to mental health professionals, sex educators, and alt-sex communities on healthy communication, abuse prevention, and mental health in BDSM. She has been a speaker at CatalystCon West, AASECT’s annual conference, the CARAS conference in Chicago, and the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit. Among her specialties are trauma (complex PTSD), sex therapy, Couples therapy (level 2 Gottman trained), and gender affirming care for trans/non binary clients.

AASECT Categories

Sexuality Therapist Training: STT A-E

A. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.

B. Techniques of sex-related assessment and diagnosis of the ‘Psychosexual Disorders’ described in the current edition of the DSM.

C. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems. Therapists with no documented graduate or post graduate training in couples counseling must acquire 16 hours of couples counseling training as part of the 60 hours of Sex Therapy Training (Section VI). Couples therapy is psychotherapy which focuses on the couple and views the couple as the client. Clinical skills such as: attending to the interaction with each partner, knowing the power dynamic/ struggle that may occur, teaching effective, authentic communication, understanding and bringing awareness to deeper, hidden unmet needs and childhood wounds, psycho education of couples skill such as active listening, validation, empathy, asking for what they want and need, and negotiating differences are imperative. Suggested options to gain couples therapy skills and training are: Imago Relational Therapy, Gottman, Schnarch, Bader & Pearson, and Emotional Focused Therapy as possible examples.** This training may be done online.

D. Theory and method of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders.**

E. Principles of consultation, collaboration, and referral.

This class offers 18 CEs for AASECT.

This program meets the requirements for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 18 CE credits.
