Are you ready to be a great sexuality therapist?

What does it mean to be a sex therapist? What happens in the therapy room of a sex therapist, and how does it differ from other forms of therapy? In this training, we explore some of the nuances and tools that sex therapists bring into the room. Students will learn about some common models for sex therapy, and how to apply systemic frameworks to the practice of sex therapy. Students will leave with concrete skills that they can apply to their own practice, whether they are new to sex therapy or veterans of the field.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how culture impacts and at times defines sexual functioning.
  • Identify at least three techniques for treating sexual dysfunction. 
  • Perform a psychosexual history.
  • Identify at least three sexual dysfunctions.
  • Name and discuss three theories for relational and emotional barriers to sexual functioning
  • Diagnose various sexual dysfunctions based on the DSM 5.
  • Recognize the role of diagnosis in both the therapist and client’s experience and conceptualization of sex therapy.
  • Critique assessment and treatment strategies of 2 other sex therapists via media clips.
  • Analyze anxiety’s role in sexual struggles.
  • Distinguish between the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic nervous systems.
  • Define and break down a common sexual dysfunction/diagnosis.
  • Describe several of the basic principles of mindfulness as they relate to the practice of sex therapy.
  • Define Sensate Focus.
  • Identify similarities and differences in how treatment is conducted in sex therapy versus traditional talk therapies.
  • Analyze their personal evolution as a sex therapist.
  • Examine the many ways sex therapy is practiced and experienced differently online
