Eroticism is a life force that gives us access to beauty, pleasure, awe, intimacy, agency, exploration, and self-definition. The Black cultural ideology of Afrofuturism asks us to look at the ways we’ve been shamed, misinterpreted, oppressed, and erased in our past and present-and to then boldly imagine and write ourselves into the future.

Sex educator, Tyrone Davis, will be leading a 90-min workshop offering education and tools on the principles of Afrofuturism, and how we can borrow its powerful and life-affirming wisdom to imagine and self-define our erotic truths with creativity, authenticity, and joy.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify three basic principles of Afrofuturism.
  • Define eroticism.
  • Apply the principles of Afrofuturism to inspire a journey of self-discovery into their erotic truths.

About Tyrone

Tyrone (he/him) is a sex educator and theater artist. Sex education workshops include, Sex and Afrofuturism: Liberate Your Erotic Imagination, F*ck the Patriarchy: Use a Sex Toy, and I am Not Your BBC: The Myth of the “Big, Black C*ck” and its Impact on Black Men in America.

As a theater artist, he has performed on Broadway and on stages across the country. He recently wrote and performed, The Lesson– an original one-person play inspired by a true event that examines the fear of sex education in schools. When a young, elementary school student at an elite, private school asks their
teacher a question about their body, it propels the school into controversy and into the press. The play details a fictional community’s response to a well-intentioned lesson.

Tyrone is a Black, Queer, Cis-Gender, First-Generation Bahamian-American. He lives on Lenape land in Harlem, New York City. This Fall, he begins a dual degree graduate program at Union Theological Seminary and Hunter College, studying for a Master’s in Divinity and a Master’s in Clinical Social Work.
