Exploring Intersectionality in the Practice of Sex Education & Sex Therapy

Class Description:

This course will allow participants to examine the ways in which current and historical systems of harm and oppression have contributed to a culture of erotophobia and how they have perpetuated harm against dehumanized and underrepresented communities. We will explore our individual relationships to our identities, to our sexuality and to our sexual and reproductive health, using the Intersectionality framework alongside other afro-indigenous frameworks and imagine the ways in which we can empower our own work as sexuality professionals to uplift the global majority and move us toward erotic liberation.

Learning Objectives

• Discuss at least two (2) historical events related to socio-cultural sexual oppression and how it is perpetuated in today’s culture.
• Identify at least two (2) personal identities which inform their work as sexuality professionals.
• Identify at least three (3) examples of how culture informs both individual and collective beliefs, values, and decision-making regarding sexuality and sexual wellness.
• Recognize at least two (2) areas in their current work that can be improved using the intersectionality framework.
• Identify at least two (2) characteristics or methods of white supremacy culture in the US.
• Identify at least three (3) myths that are created and assigned to specific groups (i.e. stereotypes, media influences, etc.).
• Identify at least two (2) areas that may be a challenge or resistance to providing care or services due to the systems of white supremacy culture.
