Class Description

The importance of touch in holistic well-being is well documented, yet many forms of touch are prohibited by the ethical and legal boundaries of talk therapists. There is a vast world of touch-based modalities that can be utilized in service of client care, but what do practitioners of these modalities actually do in sessions with a client? What are their ethical boundaries and best practices? How do clinicians find and vet these practitioners for use in collaboration in a client’s work? This two-hour introduction to the world of Somatic Sexuality Professionals will focus on three touch-based modalities (surrogate partner therapy, somatic sex education/sexological bodywork, and professional cuddling) and discuss the guiding philosophies and practices of each modality as well as review their ethical boundaries and best practices of each of these modalities.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to identify the guiding philosophies and practices of three touch-based modalities.
  • Attendees will be able to distinguish the ethical boundaries and best practices of each of these three modalities as well as identify any areas of overlap between the three.
  • Attendees will be able to identify how to refer a client or student to a Somatic Sexuality Professional.
